Stranzen

Before Stranzen knew what had happened, he was dodging bullets. A barrage of them dinged off the ass and side shields of his armor, and then he leaped to pull the Chief out of harm’s way.

Hernandez was already down, cursing and forming her energy shield to avoid shots that were plowing up dirt in front of her.

“It’s us, dammit!” she shouted, one hand on her wrist to activate comms. To Stranzen’s surprise, the message went through, at least it did locally through his helmet.

A thought hit him—had they been overrun? What did that mean for Robinson? Oh, damn, if she was hurt, or worse… Well, he wasn’t ready for that. The SEALs had trained him to deal with moments of panic, but in that instant, he didn’t care about any of that. All he knew was an overwhelming need to know if she was okay.

“I’m coming for you.” He grunted, then pushed up and charged in erratic bursts left and right, using his boosters to leap while activating shields, and then finally landed in a roll to grab the turret by its base, physically override it, and then laid it down, face-up as he continued to the ship.

“Way to go!” someone shouted behind him, maybe the Chief, but he was too focused to care.

At the opening to the ship, the first thing he saw was blood. His heart wrenched, a sickening dull pain rose from his lower abs as if he’d been kicked in the balls, and his legs went weak. He’d only fooled around with this lady, true, but in his mind it had been more. Or at least, he thought it could become more.

Now that fantasy crashed down around him as he stared at the white bits, the exploded head. He breathed, finally, and processed the image. The short hair. The way the armor didn’t quite meet expectations of a woman’s curves.

This body was a man. And there on the collar were the two stripes of a captain. Holy hell, this was the captain!

“Heat signature to your left,” Hernandez said through the comms. He stumbled as he turned, dazed, to see if she could possibly have read that right. If there was indeed a chance that Robinson had survived whatever it was that had done this to the captain.

The cockpit doors were closed and locked. He pounded on them while first shouting for her, then using his comms. “Robinson, we’re here! If you can hear me, open up!” More pounding. “Robinson, are you hurt? Can you hear me?”

“On it,” Hernandez said and stepped up.

The chief stood behind her with his rifle aimed outward, eyes turned over his shoulder to take in the situation. “I never should have left them.”

“Don’t worry,” Hernandez said. “I have movement in there.”

Using the controls and entering an override code, she stepped back, blaster ready as the doors opened.

Stranzen wasn’t so cautious, though. The second the doors were wide enough to fit, he went in, finding Robinson there with a rifle aimed his way. It wasn’t a threat—why would it be? It was his gal, waiting to be rescued.
